2023 ASA/SAS Joint Annual Conference

Welcome to the 2023 Archaeological Society of Alberta and Saskatchewan Archaeological Society Joint Annual Conference and Gathering! This year’s conference will be hosted from April 27-30, 2023 at the Bodo Archaeological Centre & Sites, home of one of the most significant bison pound sites in western Canada. The Bodo Archaeological Society is hosting this exciting event as it celebrates its 20th anniversary and the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society celebrates its 60th anniversary!

Annually, the ASA and SAS host separate conferences in their respective provinces. These conferences draw a diverse audience of Society members, archaeological heritage professionals, avocational archaeologists, students, and the general public. This year, we are once again working in partnership to bring these groups together to share current research, ideas, information, and experiences.

On the evening of Thursday, April 27th, we will kick start the conference with a Welcome Reception and Registration. Other local heritage attractions will be available for viewing also. April 28th and 29th will feature presentations/speakers highlighting their current archaeological research, an informal poster session and contest, silent auction and featured “for sale” tables. On Friday evening, attendees may choose to participate in one of a selection of archaeological “how-to” or Indigenous “hands-on” activities. Saturday evening will feature a banquet with keynote speaker. Sunday, the conference will wrap-up with a tour to the Treaty 6 Adhesion of 1879 Cairn at Sounding Lake, Alberta.

Saturday Keynote Speaker: Tim Panas – “Footprints in the Sand: Human and Bison Usage of Dunes on the Northern Plains”
